Round Barn Photo Show

Max Gray Barn

Max Gray Barn

I entered three photos in the Green Mountain Cultural Center's 26th annual Round Barn Photo Show in Waitsfield, Vermont. I was honored when the photo above, Max Gray Barn" was chosen as a Best in Show.

The barn is on one the the drives I regularly take in search of capturing a scene when the light is special. I have probably driven past this barn 60 times in the past 20 years. I have photographed it at least 10 times. On this day I was rewarded with great diffuse light hitting the barn with a dramatic background of mountains and clouds.

From one of my favorite purveyors of the human condition, Seth Godin:

Magic and irrational

"Today is Pi day, the 14th day of the 3rd month of the fifteenth year... 3.1415

Pi is our most famous irrational number. Not irrational in the sense that it's a foolish argument, a form of wishing for one thing while doing another. No, pi is irrational in a magical, beautiful sense. It can't be cropped off and fit into a box. The closer you look at pi, the more you see, forever....

To be transcendent and irrational is to always have a few more digits to spare, to demand that you not be rounded off and filed away. To be human."

Winter Stillness

Cattails

Cattails

I love wandering the back roads of Vermont all year long, but  especially in the winter. Early in the morning I have the roads almost to myself. Farms which are a bustle of activity with lots of distracting equipment in the warmer months are settled in with snow covering most of the untidiness and sometimes creating idyllic scenes.

These cattails were in a field not far from a farm yard. Standing on a snow bank with my camera pointing slightly downward I was able to isolate the cattails . The high even clouds created a very even light with out a hint of shadows. The contrast between the new snow and the cattails drew my attention resulting in this rather abstract image.
